Kia's PV5 Electric Van Transforms into Mobile Grocery Store for Free Food Delivery
Kia has converted its PV5 electric van into a mobile grocery store to deliver food and essentials to underserved rural areas in South Korea. This initiative, part of Kia's 'Move to You' program, aims to assist elderly residents who struggle to access fresh groceries. The van, equipped with flexible racks and a portable refrigerator, serves approximately 70 villages weekly, addressing significant food access challenges in the region.
Kia has taken a significant step towards addressing food access issues by converting its PV5 electric van into a mobile grocery store. This innovative initiative is part of Kia's 'Move to You' program, which aims to deliver food and other necessities to those in need, particularly in rural areas of South Korea where fresh groceries are hard to come by. The PV5, known for its versatility, has been modified to include flexible racks and a portable refrigerator, allowing it to transport fresh food and daily essentials directly to the homes of elderly residents who may find it difficult to travel to stores.
The project began in Uiseong-gun, a region facing a rapidly aging population and declining access to fresh food. With a population of around 47,000, over 50% of residents are projected to be over the age of 65, making it increasingly challenging for them to obtain basic groceries. The local infrastructure has deteriorated, leading to a situation where residents often have to travel long distances just to purchase essential items like eggs.
Kia's mobile grocery store initiative aims to alleviate these challenges by delivering food to approximately 70 villages each week. The PV5 can navigate the narrow, winding roads typical of the mountainous region, ensuring that residents receive the supplies they need. Local resident Park Hyang-sook expressed gratitude for the service, noting that many elderly individuals struggle with phone orders, making the convenience of the mobile store particularly beneficial.
In addition to food delivery, Kia is collaborating with public health centers and welfare programs to create a comprehensive care system that will extend beyond groceries to include health examinations and other services. This holistic approach highlights Kia's commitment to supporting the community's needs.
Looking ahead, Kia plans to expand this service and is considering the use of the larger PV7 electric van, which is set to debut soon and will provide even more capacity for delivering goods. The initiative not only addresses immediate food access issues but also fosters community connections as residents come together to share resources and support one another.
