Study Links Yoga Practice to Cognitive Improvement via Retinal Function in Older Adults
A recent study investigated the relationship between retinal neurovascular and mitochondrial functions and cognitive performance in older adults following a 24-week yoga intervention. The findings suggest potential associations between these factors, indicating that yoga may influence cognitive health, although further research is needed to validate these results.
A recent study published in PLOS One explored the associations between retinal neurovascular and mitochondrial function signatures and cognitive performance in healthy older adults after a 24-week yoga intervention. The research involved thirty participants, with an average age of 72 years, who engaged in either YogaCue or Hatha yoga three times a week. The study aimed to assess whether changes in retinal structure and function correlate with improvements in cognitive abilities.
Using advanced imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and the Retinal Function Imager (RFI), researchers measured retinal blood flow and structure. Cognitive performance was evaluated at the beginning and end of the intervention using various tests, including the NIH Toolbox and the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test. The results indicated several nominally significant correlations between cognitive performance improvements and changes in retinal measures, such as retinal blood flow and capillary function. However, none of these correlations maintained statistical significance after adjustments for false discovery rates, highlighting the exploratory nature of the findings.
The study underscores the growing interest in lifestyle interventions, particularly yoga, as a means to support cognitive health in aging populations. While previous research has established that yoga can enhance cognitive functions such as attention and memory, the biological mechanisms remain largely unclear. This study suggests that retinal imaging may serve as a non-invasive method to monitor cognitive health, potentially offering insights into neurovascular and mitochondrial changes associated with cognitive aging.
The authors caution that these findings are preliminary and should be interpreted as hypothesis-generating, necessitating further validation in larger cohorts. The study was conducted in accordance with ethical guidelines, and all participants provided informed consent.
