Study Examines Physical Activity Levels in Adults with Post-COVID-19 Condition

Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) is recognized as a systemic disease that can significantly hinder physical activity (PA). A recent study aimed to objectively measure PA levels among adults diagnosed with PCC and to identify the factors influencing these levels. Conducted as a cross-sectional analysis, the study utilized baseline data from a randomized controlled trial where PA was measured using accelerometry over eight consecutive days. The primary outcome was the mean 24-hour Euclidean Norm Minus One (ENMO), which reflects overall PA intensity, while the secondary outcome was the intensity gradient, indicating the distribution of activity intensity.

Among the 153 participants, 141 provided valid PA data, with a median age of 45 and a predominance of females (76.6%). The findings revealed that participants spent a median of 45.9 minutes in moderate PA and only 0.16 minutes in vigorous PA per day, indicating low overall activity levels. The median ENMO was recorded at 9.03, suggesting a significant reduction in PA among this population.

The regression analysis identified several key factors associated with lower PA levels. Chronic symptomatic diseases other than PCC were linked to reduced mean ENMO, while fatigue was also found to negatively impact activity levels. Conversely, higher functional capacity was associated with increased PA. Additionally, the study noted that educational attainment and functional capacity were linked to a more favorable intensity gradient, indicating that individuals with higher education and better functional abilities tended to engage in more vigorous activities.

The implications of these findings are substantial, as they suggest that individuals with PCC may be particularly vulnerable to inactivity due to their symptoms, which can perpetuate a cycle of worsening health. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding these factors to develop effective therapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing PA among those affected by PCC. However, it is crucial to note that this study does not establish causal relationships, and further research is needed to explore these dynamics in greater depth.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute at the University of Zurich and was published in PLOS One. It was funded by Horphag Research, and the trial was approved by the ethics committee of the Canton of Zurich. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on the long-term effects of COVID-19 and highlight the need for targeted interventions to support physical activity in individuals suffering from PCC.
