Kenyan Farmers Embrace Organic Fertilizers to Combat Soil Degradation
Kenyan farmers are increasingly turning to organic fertilizers, such as vermicompost and black soldier fly larvae, to address soil degradation caused by chemical fertilizers. This shift not only improves soil health but also enhances crop yields, responding to the rising demand for organic produce.
Kenyan farmer George Muturi has found success by using vermicompost, a natural fertilizer produced by redworms, to rejuvenate his land suffering from soil degradation due to chemical fertilizers. Agriculture plays a crucial role in East Africa's economy, yet a 2025 report from the Heinrich Boll Foundation revealed that over 40 percent of the region's soils are degraded, primarily from excessive use of chemical fertilizers, leading to an estimated loss of over $65 billion annually in productivity. The recent spike in fertilizer prices, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, has prompted farmers like Muturi to seek sustainable alternatives. In his farm located in Lari, about 50 kilometers from Nairobi, Muturi has transitioned to vermicomposting, which involves redworms breaking down food and crop waste into nutrient-rich compost. He notes, "Vermicomposting was a breakthrough for us... our soil is much better in a way that we can be able to plant and sustain the crop even during dry season." Each of his 70 beds contains around 5,000 redworms, which process layers of organic waste mixed with cow dung over six weeks to create vermicompost. Research has indicated that vermicompost can enhance soil structure, organic matter, and water retention. Although Muturi acknowledges that widespread industrial use of vermicompost is still a challenge due to the large quantities needed to match synthetic fertilizers, he has observed significant improvements in his vegetable yields and is now selling the compost to fellow farmers across Kenya. Agroecologist Harun Warui emphasizes that while chemical fertilizers may address specific soil nutrients, organic compost supports a broader soil biology, yielding long-term benefits. He states, "Vermicompost is providing a solution to farmers' dependency on synthetic input. It's saving our soils in terms of improving the health." Meanwhile, Robert Mwangi, another farmer in Nakuru County, has adopted a similar approach using black soldier fly larvae to convert food waste into organic fertilizer known as frass. Mwangi collects waste from local markets, feeding it to the larvae, which break it down before being harvested for their nutrient-rich byproduct. He explains that reliance on conventional fertilizers can degrade soil quality, creating an acidic environment detrimental to soil microbes. In contrast, organic fertilizers enhance soil fertility and productivity over time, ultimately reducing production costs. As the global demand for organic food continues to rise, Kenyan farmers are increasingly recognizing the benefits of moving away from chemical fertilizers. Muturi processes approximately 40 tonnes of food waste monthly, supplying compost to farmers nationwide, while Mwangi reports that demand for his products has far exceeded his production capacity.
