Study Links Coffee Consumption to Lower Body Fat and Healthier Metabolic Markers
A recent study from Finland suggests that regular coffee consumption is associated with lower total and abdominal fat, increased muscle mass, and healthier metabolic markers. The research analyzed data from over 2,200 participants, revealing distinct hormonal patterns related to coffee intake, particularly in men.
Coffee is a daily staple for millions around the globe, and its consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of various health conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the biological mechanisms behind these associations remain unclear. A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Oulu in Finland has shed light on this topic, indicating that regular coffee drinkers may enjoy healthier body compositions and favorable metabolic profiles.
The study analyzed data from 2,264 participants, averaging 46 years of age, who were part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Researchers aimed to explore how habitual coffee intake correlated with circulating metabolites, indicators of cardiometabolic risk, and levels of sex hormones.
Findings revealed that individuals who consumed more coffee had lower levels of both total body fat and visceral fat, along with greater skeletal muscle mass. Notably, these differences persisted even among participants with similar body mass indices (BMIs). Additionally, higher coffee consumption was linked to lower circulating concentrations of branched-chain amino acids, which, when elevated, can indicate insulin resistance and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The study also highlighted significant hormonal differences associated with coffee intake, particularly among men. Increased coffee consumption correlated with a more favorable glucose-insulin profile, higher levels of total and bioavailable testosterone, and greater concentrations of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). However, levels of free testosterone and the free androgen index were found to be modestly lower in these individuals.
In women, the hormonal associations were less pronounced, with higher coffee intake primarily linked to increased SHBG and reduced free androgen levels.
Lead author Luca Verroest emphasized the importance of these findings, stating, "Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, yet we still know surprisingly little about how it relates to our metabolism and hormones. What stood out in our findings was a distinct hormonal signature that didn't disappear even after we took into account BMI and lifestyle factors, with several of these associations differing between men and women."
The research raises intriguing questions about the potential hormonal pathways that could explain the previously observed connections between coffee consumption and metabolic health. However, as this study is observational, it cannot definitively establish causation between coffee drinking and the biological differences noted.
Finland is known for its high coffee consumption, with an average annual intake of approximately 11.8 kilograms (26 pounds) per person, making the findings particularly relevant. The researchers suggest that these results could pave the way for future studies aimed at determining whether coffee itself induces these biological changes and, if so, which specific compounds are responsible. Ongoing investigations using animal models are expected to lead to human intervention studies in the future.
The study, titled "Associations of habitual coffee intake with testosterone and cardiometabolic markers: the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study," was published in the European Journal of Nutrition. Further research will be necessary before these findings can inform dietary recommendations.
