B Vitamins B2 and B6 Linked to Improved Metabolic Health in New Study

Recent research has highlighted the significant role of two B vitamins, B2 and B6, in promoting cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health. The study analyzed dietary data from over 14,000 U.S. adults and found that higher intakes of these vitamins were associated with lower odds of advanced cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome.

B vitamins are often recognized for their role in energy metabolism, but new research suggests that two specific B vitamins, B2 (riboflavin) and B6, may have a more profound connection to cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health than previously understood. This study focused on cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, a framework that identifies the overlap between conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity. Researchers analyzed health and dietary data from 14,576 U.S. adults with CKM syndrome who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2020.

The study examined six B vitamins: B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin, and folate. Of particular interest were advanced stages of CKM syndrome, which indicate a high risk of cardiovascular disease or established cardiovascular disease. Participants provided dietary information through two separate 24-hour recalls, allowing the researchers to estimate their intake of each B vitamin. The findings revealed that individuals with higher intakes of B2 and B6 had significantly lower odds of advanced CKM syndrome compared to those with the lowest intakes. Specifically, those with the highest B2 intake had a 27% lower likelihood of advanced CKM syndrome, while higher B6 intake was associated with a 26% reduction in risk.

While niacin also showed a smaller association, B1 and folate did not consistently correlate with advanced CKM syndrome after adjusting for factors such as age, income, smoking, and overall diet quality. The researchers also validated their findings in a separate cohort of 323 adults in China, where a similar pattern emerged.

B2 and B6 function as cofactors for various enzymes, essential for converting food into usable energy. They also play a role in managing oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic issues. However, it is important to note that this study cannot establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship due to its cross-sectional nature, which means that dietary habits and health status were assessed at the same time. It remains unclear whether lower intakes of B2 and B6 contribute to poorer CKM health or if individuals with advanced disease alter their diets due to changes in appetite or dietary restrictions.

Both vitamins are found in a variety of everyday foods. B2 is present in dairy products, eggs, meat, and certain leafy greens, while B6 can be found in poultry, fish, meat, potatoes, and chickpeas. The study focused solely on B vitamins obtained from food, excluding supplements, which may have led to an underestimation of total intake. Consequently, the research does not clarify whether obtaining these vitamins from food differs in effect from supplementation.

This study underscores the importance of including B-vitamin-rich foods in a nutrient-dense diet. While B2 and B6 should not be viewed as standalone solutions, their association with lower odds of advanced CKM syndrome highlights the need for a balanced eating pattern that supports overall health. The findings provide an interesting insight into the potential role of these vitamins in metabolic health, warranting further investigation to determine their actual influence on CKM syndrome.
